Why fungi matter

Mushrooms are the visible tip.

Fungi extend through soil as fine threads called mycelium. They break down tough material, hand water and nutrients to plant roots, and connect plants to each other. The mushroom you can see is only the fruit.

Our work draws on the research of mycologists Paul Stamets and Tradd Cotter, and fungal numbers are one of the measurements in every complete soil food web assessment.
